Robot vacuums can be great for keeping your floors tidy but they cannot replace a traditional vacuum. Even the best robots have trouble getting deep into carpets and rugs, and they can become tangled in cords and socks.
Your robot will last longer if it is maintained with regular maintenance. This includes replacing filters, cutting the tangled hairs from brushes, and emptying the dust bin.
Battery Life
Most robot vacuums can handle one or two cleaning sessions before needing a charge. The Ecovacs Q30S Combo is a close second in our top choices. It comes with a battery that can last up to 180 minute (3,230 square feet) on one charge. This should be more than enough for most small homes with a mixture of hard floors and low pile carpets or larger homes with rooms that are similar in size.
A longer battery life means that the robot will spend more time cleaning and less time charging on its dock. It's recommended to select a model with a self-emptying dust bin, since these models are more efficient in collecting debris and returning to the dock for recharging. It's also important to empty or replace the filter and clean cameras and sensors on a regular basis to ensure they can clearly see your home.
Smart mapping technology is an important feature to look for, as it allows you to program your robot to clean certain rooms or avoid areas where it's likely to crash into furniture or other obstacles. This feature is also beneficial to ensure that your robot is able to get under and around furniture such as beds, sofas and other large objects. Some robovacs are inexpensive and come with boundary strips that you can use to block off specific areas. Other high-end models rely on sensors and cameras.
Even the most powerful robot vacuums can't replace a conventional vacuum for heavy-duty, large-pile dirt and debris. It is recommended to keep a power vacuum on hand to tackle these tasks, and also schedule robot vacs to do light cleaning throughout the week.
Navigation
A robot must be able to navigating your home without being caught or running into things such as metal screws or pet hair, or sand. In our tests we used a tracking device used to follow the robot around the multi-room lab. It then maps its surroundings. We also examine how well it avoids obstacles, including power cords, furniture legs, and pet waste.
The top robots can map out multiple floors, and recognize landmarks like doors and windows. The most advanced robots, like the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra have a dual sensor navigation system that uses an LIDAR to map out a room and a structured-light camera on the front to identify objects in real-time. This allows the S8 to avoid common obstacles such as power cords and furniture legs, and it can store up to four different floor maps within its internal memory.
The more affordable models don't have this type of object detection and rely on bump sensors which aren't as accurate. In my testing they were able to rip through cords, dog poop, and even shoes that were placed in the middle of the room. The most cost-effective choice the Dreametech D10+, is an exception to this. It has excellent carpet and hard floor, tangle, and hair pickup. It also has a near-perfect auto empty score.
Another feature worth mentioning is a large onboard dustbin which doesn't have to be manually empty, and for those models that mop, a water tank that can hold weeks worth of mopping sessions. Karcher's RCV 5 is a great illustration of this. It has a wide enough footprint to fit under furniture, but not too big that it cannot fit in the nook between your bathtub and toilet.
Apps
Robot vacuums are similar to their upright counterparts and require a lot of technology to keep them up-to-date. There are many choices available in a market that is mature. But even the top models require interaction with their users - particularly when cleaning schedules are being planned, establishing a home floor plan and establishing virtual barriers.
To lessen the chance of this kind of interaction, look for a model with its own app to determine the location of your home, and save the settings for the future. This will let the robot vacuum start where it left off on subsequent runs, instead of having to restart the mapping process every time.
It is also recommended to consider models that offer spot or zone cleaning. You can instruct the robot vacuum cleaner to focus on a specific area, such as under the table after a large family meal. You can typically use the app or voice commands.
Avoidance of objects is a different feature that's included in several models. It lets the robot observe something in its path, such as shoes, a crate of dog toys or a crate full of dog toys, and then guide itself around it. This will stop it from crashing into objects that could harm its sensors or cause jams.
Some of the most expensive models we tested have this feature. They depend on bump sensor technology to do this however they did not always stay clear of things I tested at home.

Pet Hair
Look for an upright vacuum cleaner designed to pick up pet hair. The best models have powerful suction capabilities and a brush that prevents tangling, and an emptying mechanism that can automatically empty hair into the bin when it is needed. Some models can detect levels of dirt and adjust cleaning intensity. They can even spot objects that aren't part of the flooring in your home, such as furniture toys, food bowls, toys cords, and much more.
Some robot vacuums include pet-friendly features, such as a small water dispenser that can be used for mopping floors and an HEPA filter that can help reduce allergens such as pet dust. They could also provide a quieter operation that can reduce the amount of noise generated during cleaning sessions.
Robot vacuums that have mapping capabilities are an excellent option for pet owners, as they are designed to analyze your home and develop a plan of attack in accordance with the layout and the obstacles in each room. This allows them to "learn the structure of your home and design a more efficient routes.
Some models provide spot cleaning. This lets you manually target an area of your house for intensive cleaning. In our tests, we found that the top models can remove fine particles such as baking soda, sand orzo, metal screws and pet hair, as well as heavier debris like oatmeal orzo, and screws made of metal.
According to the brand, robots can last years and still perform well as long as they're maintained. For instance cleaning hair that is tangled out of brushes and emptying dust bins after each use, and wiping sensors and cameras down as required.
